kids are people too

January 25th, 2008

It is getting much easier to see when other people are treating my kids disrespectfully. I might be too tired tonight to find a way to talk about it here, without getting feisty. But I am really beginning to see how (unintentionally, I hope) insulting, patronizing, and superficial people behave with and towards my child.

Why is so difficult for other people to find meaningful ways of interacting with my child that do not include quizzes, acting dumb, or being rude and dismissive?

I am actually seeing much clearer many ways in which people are unkind to each other, and communicate poorly. If they taught that stuff in school, I might actually think school had something to offer.

I really am too tired to write anymore and must go to sleep.

Ive been having issues with posts getting eaten by the internet, so I hope third time is the charm.
Bella update: Vanessa texted me that Bella is 3 lbs 1 oz and off oxygen. She has to be 4.5 lbs, off oxygen, no sleep apnea, for her to come home. I still havent seen her yet. Its too long a drive for me to make with the two kids, especially a baby. Maybe this summer.

Buzz got medication for his infected tooth, so thats better, but we all still have colds. Coughs, drippy noses, tired, achy, etc. No fun. At least Henry still nurses pretty well, even congested. Zibby has a much harder time, and always has, nursing when she is stuffed up. Poor Henry has been so sad, he ususally smiles all day long, but he has been whimpery and raspy and so forlorn sounding. His eyes are red and watery, and he just looks pitiful. We were stuck inside all week long. The only thing that was good for was cooking.

I made lots of new things. Zucchini Bisque, Creamy Veggie Soup, raisin carrot cookies, apples stuffed with dates/raisin compote…we stayed on diet all week, too. I made chicken stock that even Buzz said was delicious.

Today we went to a local indoor farmers market that I heard about on my CSA list. I get grass fed chickens and their eggs from my CSA. At the indoor market, was a farm selling grass finished beef. I got a 25 lb selection package. I also bought some vinegars from the table next to the farmer. I chose a raspberry and a garlic one.

there were a couple of other tables there, selling yarns, animals knitted from the yarns, soaps and stuff, and some syrups and jams.

After that we went home and Henry and I napped while Buzz and Zibby went to the park for a bit. We had chicken soup and chips and guacamole for dinner. Tomorrow I will work on my menu plan for the next week. I plan to do a lot of my bulk cooking on Mondays, since we have things out of the house on Tues/Wed. Makes it easier to pack lunches. I have some more new recipes I want to try, too. Got to use up those dates. Incidentally, the dates are so freaky looking. Larval. They really disturb me. But they taste good. Another thing that I thought was weird was soaking nuts in water in the fridge. I tried it with almonds and they taste SO MUCH better that way. Amazing. You have to use raw, but they end up being so yummy. Easier to digest, fluffier without being soft.

ok, henry is gurgling and I have to go. please god, dont let this post disappear.

happy new Year!, 2008

January 1st, 2008

Happy New Year. All my family is sleeping, but I took a long afternoon/evening nap (the mimosas at brunch did me in, I think) so I am not tired. I was working on my 101/1001 list , but got stuck around 50 or so.  Last night Buzz and I watched a documentary called New York Doll about Arthur Killer Kane, who was a member of the New York Dolls. In the 80s he hit his personal rock bottom and then got religion with the LDS church, better known as The  Mormons. Since I grew up Mormon, and since Buzz was a fan of the band, we both liked the documentary. And I think we were *both* crying at the end.  After Buzz went to bed, I watched another documentary called “Slippin” about gang members in LA, covering 4 young men from 1995-2005. The story was very sad and disheartening, and honestly, the quality of the film wasnt that good, either. I suppose it was interesting-a window into a life I can only imagine. It did make me appreciate how much we have, and how grateful I am that I was not born into poverty.  Today we had some friends over for brunch. Buzz made his famous breakfast burritos and homefries. Super yummy. The girls played pretty well together, and we even got inspired to make some ATCs.  My sister called and told me that Arabellaarabellais now 15 inches and 2 lbs 6 oz. She was born at 2 lbs 3 oz and 13.5 inches. Vanessa gets to go see her and do kangaroo care and spend time with her, which is really nice. The little doll in the picture is one Devonney picked out for her little sister. It must be really tiny!  Bella is almost one month old, but I dont think she can leave the hospital for a month or two. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. :)  One year ago I found out I was expecting a second baby, and now, I get to hold him in my arms everyday and smooch him up. He is 3.5 months old and rolling over, front to back, back to front, and even SCOOTING in a forward motion. Its not crawling, but he does move. He likes a target, and if you put a toy or blankie in front of him, he’ll go get it. Me oh My. He has a huge smile and is giggling more often. We all love him like crazy, and we are so glad he came to be in our family. IMG_0101.JPG  IMG_0094.JPG
